It was written in loving memory of Sue Goldman and inspired by the life of Jonathan May, wonderful cellists, musicians and friends; commissioned by cellist Joan Markstein, in honor of Sue Goldman, 2007.
This beautiful and sentimental work was written with a majestic Celtic flavor. It has traditional sounding harmonies and lovely textures throughout. The cello's range and depth is well explored in this work, and the technical challenges include high and fast passage work, double stops, and a cadenza which hints at the unaccompanied suites by Bach.
