Latvian Sinfonia - All Parts
The Spring Hill Elementary School Advanced Orchestra wanted to remember Liya and commissioned this through-composed work which uses four memorable and authentic Latvian folk melodies as its source of inspiration.
This work is dedicated to the memory of 13 year old, Liya Doblaguyuk, who was taken tragically by cancer in 1996. Liya was a bright, positive and talented young lady who made friends wherever she went. She served as the concertmaster of her school orchestra in Fairfax, Virginia.
The movements are democratically composed and seamlessly woven together in a way which leaves the listener with a sense of nostalgia. The premiere was a brave and heartfelt performance. Over fifty children participated in the concert, which was held at Spring Hill Elementary School. Led by director, Ruth Donahue, the orchestra played to a standing ovation! Liya's mother was in attendance.
